Some of the early Yamaha digital pianos that were around in the late eighties lacked the lightness of touch that electric pianos and synthesizers already had, and since they also lacked any dynamic/tonal range, I doubt Gould would have warmed to them, or even wanted to play them - they served little or no purpose. However, the digital pianos that have been around since the late nineties (particularly some Yamaha Clavinovas and Roland digitals) have come a long way both in terms of action and touch, as well as sound, and I think Gould would have been far more excited at the possibilities digital pianos hold when it comes to connecting them to a computer, as well as the possibilities of a digital piano in the recording studio as compared to its acoustic counterpart. <br /><br />Gould loved the Carlos &quot;Switched on Bach&quot; album which was recorded on a Moog in Carlos&#39; living room. He felt that Bach&#39;s music worked as well on this instrument as it did on piano, and his comments on this record, as well as the radio interview he conducted with Carlos on his &quot;Art of Glenn Gould&quot; radio program reveal that he was far less precious about Bach as some of the purists around today. So again, I have little doubt that he would have been intruiged by the possibilities a digital piano holds when it comes to being able to record into the piano itself, or hooking it up to a computer, or even creating contrapuntal music and radio. <br /><br />As for your second question as to whether any piano available now can come close to CD318 - I have played a couple of pianos (both very battered old Steinways with a sort of Harpsi-piano sound) that feel similar to touch as CD318.<br />However, CD318 suffered a fair bit of damage and as a result is certainly not even close to the piano Glenn Gould recorded some of his finest recordings on. And even though the used Yamaha that Gould fell in love with after CD318 got battered was closer to his beloved Chickering than CD318, it also had some of the things he loved about CD318 - the &quot;just right action&quot;, lighter bass, and clear yet warm sound. The CBC Radio 2 devised a competition to select 49 songs to send to Barack Obama to celebrate his inauguration next Tuesday. In the classical section it seems that his Aria from the Goldberg Variations is top of the polls. You can vote at cbc.ca if you want and I hope that you do want to.<br>In Sept last year CBC Radio 2 changed their format and this angered many of the station&#39;s long time listeners as it seemed as if the plan was to dumb down, trivialise and popularise the programs.<br>On the cbc blog many suggestions have been put forward as to what other good classical radio stations there are around the internet that the angered listeners could choose as a substitute for the terrible NEW Radio 2.The Netherlands, Australian, Norwegian and NPR music channels have all been mentioned.<br>So I have suggested they all listen to your podcasts from Offbeat Radio 103.2 FM.
